The Reality of Religious Freedoms in Eritrea and the Position of the African Union
Keywords:

This study sought to answer the following two questions: What is the reality of religious rights in Eritrea, as observed by monitoring bodies? And what is the African Union's stance on religious freedoms in Eritrea, a topic of much discussion? Using a descriptive methodology, the study reached several key conclusions: The human rights situation in general, and religious rights in particular, in Eritrea is highly concerning due to ample evidence indicating violations of fundamental freedoms. These violations have been monitored and documented by relevant UN and regional reports, as well as human rights organizations. Despite widespread international condemnation of human rights violations in Eritrea, including abuses of religious freedoms and rights, the African Union's position remains limited and below expectations. Its stance often prioritizes regional and continental stability, which may make it hesitant to adopt a strong position that directly criticizes a member state. Furthermore, it lacks practical follow-up and effective pressure on the Eritrean government to reform the country's religious freedoms record.
