Abstract

Author cinema in Tunisia reflects a profound mirror of the historical, social, and political transformations the country has experienced since independence. It has provided a wide space for free expression and the search for a cinematic identity that transcends mere entertainment to become a tool for thought and critique. In its early stages, this cinema aligned with the major national projects promoted by the political system at the time, turning into a means of reinforcing modern Tunisian identity. However, this orientation soon collided with a more complex reality, as some filmmakers began to use cinematic imagery to question official ideological directions and expose social contradictions that remained absent from public discourse. “The emotionality of art emerges from its ideological orientation” (Bousbilov, 1991, p.316). During that historical phase, directors sought to present cinematic models that combined political awareness with aesthetic innovation, portraying issues of individual and collective identity away from official narratives, relying on troubled characters and scenarios that reflected the fragility of Tunisian reality.

With the tightening of censorship, cinematic discourse became more symbolic, as filmmakers faced a complex equation that required them to balance delivering critical messages with maintaining the possibility of screening their films. Yet, this situation did not prevent some directors from taking bolder stances, using cinema as a tool to resist political and social repression amid restrictions on public space and the absence of free platforms for expression.

Following the 2011 Revolution, this cinema witnessed major transformations, with new names emerging who managed to break traditional constraints and address more sensitive topics such as issues of the body, religion, and power. The focus was no longer solely on direct political issues but extended to deeper concerns with the psychological and social dimensions of individuals within this changing reality.
