This study presents a critical edition of Sari al-Dīn al-Miṣrī’s marginal commentary (Ḥāshiyah) on a number of subtle exegetical discussions in al-Bayḍāwī’s commentary on Sūrat al-Fātiḥah. It also offers a methodological analysis of his approach, tracing and examining the views of the scholars whose opinions he discusses, critiques, and analyzes.
Furthermore, the study highlights the distinctive features of his methodology and the extent of his reliance on a wide range of sources. It demonstrates how he employed his expertise in Arabic grammar, rhetoric, logic, legal theory (uṣūl al-fiqh), and Qurʾānic readings (qirāʾāt) to elucidate meanings and establish the intended purport of the text.
